FINE ART DIGITAL PAPERS

Pharos Editions is an authorised reseller of Crane Museo and a number of other fine digital papers.

This page is in preparation and doesn't look very slick. The papers are.

Crane's Museo Fine Art Digital Papers

Crane are the oldest and most respected paper manufacturers in the United States.

We have been printing on their papers for some time and now have been appointed as an authorised reseller. Crane papers for digital printing are all 100% acid free cotton with no optical brighteners, which give excellent archival properties.

Crane Museo Portfolio Rag

Intedended fr photographic work this paper delivers sharp detail and a wide gamut for all digital art purposes requiring a matte paper finish .

This is a hard surface , fine tooth paper that resists surface damage. It is 100% cotton with no optical brighteners. With pigmented inks under average indoor display conditions, its archival rating is around 120 years when properly framed.

Crane Museo Silver Rag

The paper is a full weight fine art paper at 300gsm. It has an unique surface appearance that is very attractive; smooth, yet sublety textured. The paper is free from flaking, utilises the PhotoBlack ink in the Epson K3 inkset and is free of bronzing .

Although it is an "art" type paper it has a DMax and gamut that rivals gloss and lustre papers. Colours have a high degree of luminosity . Subjectively, the prints "glow".

"Black and White" prints are very rich indeed, with detail reaching into deep shadow areas and delicate highlights. The secret of ultra high quality is in the inkset combined with six separate coatings applied to the paper, and in the case of Pharos Edition prints, very special custom profiles built for us by Les Walkling.

For optimum results we recommend a custom profile, and we can provide this service if required.

The paper has a sheen when held at some angles to the light which is pleasantly similar on printed and non printed surfaces. The image and ground complement each other and do not clash.

Museo Silver Rag is in a new class of  digital substrate, with the warmth and tactility of a pure cotton art paper, and a colour and tone rendition similar to the best lustre photo type papers.

The prints also have a high resistance to the scuffing and kinking that has plagued many other papers in both matte and smooth surfaces.

As well as being excellent for fine art print production, this paper should be very popular with commercial photographers who require very classy prints of the highest quality.

This paper is now available in rolls and sheets .

Other Papers for Sale

We can also supply Lanajet  (France) and St Cuthbert's Mill (UK) Somerset Velvet- please enquire

Lanajet is an etching paper coated for inkjet. It is the original paper used for Iris prints by a number of major artists known as Concord Rag in the USA.. It has a warm base, a smooth surface and a colour gamut a little less  than later papers. This should not be a turn-off. Colours are very rich , with an appearance like pastels

Somerset Velvet takes our pigment inks in a similar fashion to Lanajet, but is based on watercolour paper , with a pronounced texture.

Papers for Text in Artists Books

Because they have so many pages , artists books have been very expensive to print by pigment inkjet printing.

We have tested Schutt Dutch Etching paper, Lanaquerelle Paper , St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford and Magnani (Italy) uncoated papers for text and block tone printing. By altering settings required for continuous tone printing, we have been able to increase speed without noticable loss of visual sharpness.

This means a significant drop in price is possible for artists printing limited edition books with tipped in images, that also gives access to some extrordinarily beautiful fine art etching and watercolour papers with sharpness and colour combinations not possible with most other processes.

Continuous tone images do print on these papers but with a reduced gamut and maximum density compared with coated papers. This appearance, similar to solvent and Polaroid transfer processes can be very attractive , giving a somewhat antique feeling.
